Louisa County's first official water trail is now in place! This unique trail meanders through pools, wetlands and timbered chutes. One option connects paddlers to the Mississippi River via a short portage. Find out more »

River Trails

Official (signed) river trails are just being developed in Louisa County. However, there is good access to both the Iowa and Mississippi Rivers so it is easy to plan trips from a few hours to a couple of days in length. Find out more »

Other Paddling Options

Other places to paddle in Louisa County range from small ponds to Mississippi River backwaters. Some areas have water year round, others are seasonal wetlands. Try these areas:

  • Big Timber Division of Port Louisa NWR (year round, Mississippi River backwater)
  • Cone Marsh Wildlife Management Area (may have water year round)
  • Indian Slough Wildlife Area (water year round but amount varies)
  • Horseshoe Bend Division of Port Louisa NWR (seasonal)
  • Klum Lake Wildlife Management Area (seasonal)
  • Flaming Prairie Park (small, seasonal wetland)
  • Virginia Grove Recreation Area (small pond with year round water)
