Earth Day River Cleanup

When: Saturday, April 18, 2009, 8:00 am - 3:00 pm
Where: Iowa River (Cappy Russell to Ferry Landing)

NOTE: Children under age 16 must ride in a canoe with an adult!

What:Volunteers will be working on the Iowa River from Cappy Russell to Ferry Landing in canoes, kayaks and motorized boats to pick up as much trash and debris as possible from last summer’s flood.

The number of canoes and kayaks available for the cleanup is limited so you are encouraged to register early. You may also bring your own canoe or kayak to the clean-up but you still need to pre-register.

Groups are encouraged to attend but youth groups should note that children under 16 must have an adult in the canoe with them (1 adult for each child attending).

Volunteers are also need to help at the boat landings with unloading and sorting trash. If you would like to get involved but do not want to pick up or sort trash, donations of snacks and refreshments for clean-up volunteers are also needed.

This Earth Day river clean-up is made possible by a grant from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources CLEAR mini-grant with funding through Tri-Rivers Conservation Foundation. Other sponsors include Louisa County Solid Waste Agency, Louisa County ISU Extension and Louisa County Izaak Walton League.

If river conditions are unsuitable, the clean-up will be held at Odessa Wildlife Complex or on dry land.

Spring Splash

When: Saturday, April 25, 2009 9:00 am – 3:00 pm
Where: Odessa Wildlife Complex, Snively Access

Cost: $20/canoe or $15/person for single kayak; no fee if you have your own boat (donations to water trail program accepted)
What: Pack a lunch and grab a friend because were going to make a splash and have some fun! This guided kayak and canoe trip on the Odessa Water Trail will be an adventurous paddle winding through the panoramic wildlife area. This is a great opportunity to experience the outdoors in Iowa.

Mothers Day on the Marsh

When: Sunday, May 10, 2009, 10:00 am
Where: Indian Slough Wildlife Area
How to register: Use online registration form or call 319-523-8381
Cost: $10/person for canoe or $15/person for single kayak; no fee if you have your own boat (donations to water trail program accepted)
What: Come see the mothers on the marsh - ducks, geese, blackbirds, swallows and more will all be busy preparing nests for their spring broods. Indian Slough provides a perfect opportunity to get a close look at the birds and other wildlife. Local naturalists will lead this 1 1/2 to 2 hour trip. Put-in and take-out will be from the Main Access. A limited number of canoes and kayaks will be available from the Louisa County Conservation Board - register early to get yours reserved! Online registration available April 15.

Full Moon Paddle

When: Friday, September 4, 9:00 pm - 11:00 pm
Where: Odessa Water Trail

What: Enjoy a leisurely paddle on the Odesa Water Trail by the light of the full moon. Put-in and Take-out will be from Shafer's Access . Participants can also paln to camp if they choose.
